Former Ajax boss Frank de Boer odds-on favourite to land Everton job after managerial axe falls on Roberto Martinez

Holland great Frank de Boer is the odds-on favourite to be named Everton boss after the managerial axe fell on Roberto Martinez.

De Boer stepped down from his post as Ajax manager today claiming it was time for “something else” after his sixth and final year in charge at the Amsterdam Arena saw rivals PSV Eindhoven claim the Eredivisie title.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes, an ex-Everton player, has also been linked with the Goodison Park hotseat, as have outgoing Manchester City chief Manuel Pellegrini, Southampton’s Ronald Koeman and former manager David Moyes.

“If a club like Everton comes to him, of course he will be interested to talk,” said De Boer’s agent Guido Albers. “They will have their own shortlist. If Frank is on the shortlist, I don’t know.”

Martinez — appointed in June 2013 — was sacked less than 24 hours after Everton’s limp 3-0 thrashing at Sunderland, while protests among a section of the club’s supporters have grown louder during a run of one victory in 10 matches.

The 42-year-old, who had three years left on his contract, departed with Everton 12th in the top-flight, having guided the Toffees to their best Premier League points tally of 72, and a fifth-place finish, during his first season in charge.
