Flutey back in contention as Lions prepare to face Sharks

ENGLAND centre Riki Flutey has given the British and Irish Lions a fitness boost ahead of their penultimate warm-up game against the Sharks on Wednesday.

Flutey will resume training today after overcoming a knee injury he sustained in the Lions’ opening tour game against the Royal XV. The Wasps player will hope to earn his first start of the tour when head coach Ian McGeechan picks his side from an almost fully fit squad.

Wales flanker Martyn Williams is the only player out of Wednesday’s clash as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. However, he is expected to be fit for the first Test on 20 June.

Meanwhile, prop Andrew Sheridan has played down the personal praise he received from Cheetahs’ coach Naka Drotske after Saturday’s unconvincing 26-24 victory. Drotske suggested that Sheridan’s scrimmaging power would cause the Springboks problems in the upcoming Test series.

Sheridan said: “It’s not about me trying to make statements, it’s getting the opportunity to play and go out and do my very best. As soon as you start feeling pleased with yourself, that’s when you come unstuck.”
