A flotilla of historic vessels will make a royal river salute on the River Thames today to mark Queen Elizabeth II becoming the UK's longest reigning monarch.

The flotilla of boats will include the Havengore and Gloriana, which took part in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee River Pageant in 2012, as well as the fireboat, Massey Shaw and other leisure cruisers and passenger boats.

They will set off at midday just east of Tower Bridge, with the boats sounding their horns for one minute.

Tower Bridge will be raised in salute and as the procession passes by HMS Belfast, a four gun salute will sound while Massey Shaw will shoot jets of water into the air.

The procession will end half an hour later outside the Houses of Parliament with a final fanfare and 'three cheers'.

As of today it has been 63 years and 216 days since the Queen came to the throne. She has finally toppled her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria to take the title.
