Fisher’s reeling them in by realising his huge potential
I’VE known Ross Fisher for a good number of years now and it’s been a pleasure to have seen him mature both as a man and as a world-class golfer.
As the club professional at Wentworth, just down the road from me, I’ve watched Ross grow through the ranks and it’s no surprise to see him fulfilling his huge potential.
Ross has got the best temperament of any young golfer I think I have ever seen, and put that to great use when holding his nerve to claim the World Match Play Championship in Spain at the weekend – his biggest tournament win to date.
He played beautifully all week, holding off Angel Cabrera to earn a place in the final where he came into his own to beat American Anthony Kim 4&3 for the £750,000 winners’ cheque.
Oh what he’d give for much the same at the Ryder Cup next year.
Ross has the best record of any Brit in the four majors this year and is now up to fourth in the Race to Dubai.
You certainly wouldn’t bet against him making a late surge and winning the thing in the next three weeks.
The same can also be said for Ian Poulter, who claimed his first tournament win in two years at the Singapore Open. Poults is now fourth in the Ryder Cup standings – if he wasn’t a certainty for next year, then he is now.
It’s a big weekend for me as I defend my Castello Masters title in Spain, knowing that only victory is good enough to win a third Order of Merit.
Woosie currently leads the way but this is entirely in my hands. I’m playing well enough and capable of winning this, but it’s now or never.
