Women's teams will feature on the forthcoming Fifa '16 video games – marking the first time women's football has featured in EA Sports' popular franchise.

Players will be able to take control of 12 international women's teams, including England, Germany and the USA – all of whom are due to feature at next month's World Cup finals in Canada.

"It's been in the pipeline for a few years, and really it was just a case of making sure that the game was in a good enough state for it to work properly", explained series vice-president David Rutter in an interview with The Guardian.

China, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Canada, Sweden and Australia also feature in the game.

Players are built in the game using the same complex motion capture technology applied to the men's teams, however players' ratings will be scaled relative to the women's game.

American soccer star Alex Morgan said: "It is such an honor for women’s players and our team to be included in FIFA 16. I always wondered what it would be like to see our team in the game and it is very cool to know that it is now a reality".

Stephanie Houghton tweeted: "Finally it happened!"
