Fed-up Fabregas bans talk of title challenge after City win
ARSENAL captain Cesc Fabregas has poured scorn on endless assessments of the Gunners’ chances of winning a first Premier League title since 2004.
The north Londoners delivered a powerful statement of intent with a 3-0 win at Manchester City on Sunday, ending a run of defeats against fellow title hopefuls. The victory propelled Arsenal into second in the table, five points behind runaway leaders Chelsea, and has lifted hopes that Arsene Wenger’s men could mount a prolonged challenge.
But Fabregas, perhaps weary from seeing one too many campaigns fizzle out, insists it is far too early to judge their improvement.
“It looks like after every win you have to say, ‘Oh, you are more mature than last year’, but it is just one more game, let’s not get carried away,” said the Spain midfielder.
“Now we have the game against Newcastle [tomorrow in the Carling Cup], which is the most important one at the moment. The time to talk about if we have matured or are better than before will be at the end of the season.
“In football, you know what people will say when you win, and you know what people will say when you lose. You just have to keep focused on what you do, in training and in the game, give everything for the team and the rest is not up to you. We have a very good team, with lots of young players. We have to make it a great time by winning things.”
Fabregas was awarded man of the match at Eastlands but insisted Samir Nasri, scorer of the opening goal, or goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski would have been more deserving recipients.
He wrote on Twitter: “Very happy with my performance but Nasri and Fabianski should have won MOTM [man of the match] as the first had a goal and assist and the other made two top saves.”
