Fears over Brit special Fifa status
BRITAIN’S special privileges within Fifa could be under threat following the Football Association’s failed attempt to halt Sepp Blatter’s re-election as president of the world governing body.
The stinging criticism that followed English calls for a postponement of Wednesday’s farcical election, in which Blatter stood unopposed, has led to fears of a backlash against the FA and other home nations.
Britain is currently entitled to a vice-presidency in Fifa, with Northern Ireland’s Jim Boyce succeeding Englishman Geoff Thompson in the role this week, while each of the four countries has a seat on the game’s law making body, the International FA Board (IFAB).
Boyce said: “Obviously the British associations are concerned someone may try to take the issue to a future Fifa Congress. That’s the threat.”
