Extinction Rebellion protests: Climate change activists protest at Heathrow Airport

Climate change demonstrators are protesting at Heathrow Airport this morning as thousands of holidaymakers prepare to fly off for the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Eco-activist group Extinction Rebellion said 15 young demonstrators, aged under 17, were standing outside the airport with a banner reading “Are we the last generation?”

Yesterday Heathrow said it was working with police to address any issues and Scotland Yard said it would take “firm action” against disruptive protests at the airport.

The fifth day of action comes as home secretary Sajid Javid told the police to use the “full force of the law” against demonstrators.

“Let me be clear – I totally condemn any protesters who are stepping outside the boundaries of the law,” he said.

“They have no right to cause misery for the millions of people who are trying to lead their daily lives. Unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated."

More than 500 people have been arrested in connection with the protests this week, and three people were denied bail yesterday and will be held in custody for a month after being charged with obstructing the railway.

Protesters continue to blockade key central London roads at Oxford Circus, Parliament Square and Waterloo Bridge. There is a legal protest taking place at Marble Arch.
