Sports data giant Sportradar has continued its spree of major deals by signing a new contract with the NBA until 2031, City PM can reveal.

The agreement, announced today, will see the Swiss company provide betting data to the world-leading basketball competition on an exclusive basis.

The eight-year deal extends Sportradar’s current arrangement with the NBA, which still has two years to run.

“We are delighted that the NBA has chosen Sportradar as the Official Partner who can support the global popularity and explosive growth of the game,” said Sportradar chief executive Carsten Koerl.

“Basketball is the largest U.S. sport in the world by popularity and, as a market leader, we are best positioned with the technological expertise and industry relationships to help the NBA entertain fans globally.”

Sportradar’s contract also covers the NBA’s women’s and minor leagues, the WNBA and G League.

It is the latest significant deal struck by Sportradar this year, following agreements with European football’s governing body Uefa, the International Tennis Federation, the International Cricket Council and ice hockey’s NHL.

The move also means that, from 2023-24, Sportradar will have exclusive betting data rights partnerships with two of the four big US sports leagues, the NBA and NHL.

Sportradar floated in September on New York’s NASDAQ exchange, valuing the company at more than $7bn.

Chief executive Koerl banked more than $2bn from the IPO, according to reports.

The firm was founded by two Norwegian computer science students around the turn of the century.

Koerl invested and helped grow it into the industry leader it has become as the online gambling industry has grown.

The NBA is projected to generate $112m in bets in 2021, more than three times as much as the NFL.
