Everton win big on Europa return

EVERTON boss Roberto Martinez felt his team were rewarded for embracing their participation in the Europa League last night with a 4-1 win over Wolfsburg.

A packed Goodison Park enjoyed a first European encounter in five years as an own goal from Ricardo Rodriguez, plus a Seamus Coleman strike, Leighton Baines’ penalty and Kevin Mirallas effort rendered Rodriguez’s 94th-minute free-kick scant consolation.

Martinez said: “It was a really good evening. We did a lot of talking about European nights at Goodison and it was phenomenal to see the fans and it was pleasing to finish with that scoreline.”

Elsewhere in Group H, Lille escaped with a 1-1 draw at home to Russian side FK Krasnodar who had led at half-time. Tottenham’s Group C rivals Asteras Tripolis and Besiktas also drew 1-1.

Scottish champions Celtic twice lost the lead in a 2-2 draw away at Red Bull Salzburg leaving Dinamo Zagreb to top Group D with a 5-1 win over Astra Giurgiu.
