European golf’s greatest day

That was European golf’s greatest ever day. America have come back before but that was in Brookline, that was at home. This, for Europe, was away.

England’s Ian Poulter should be given an MBE for his magnificent, influential display. If he was in the transfer market, there wouldn’t be enough money in the entire world to buy him.

The key moment in the comeback for me came from Justin Rose, however. His birdie from 15ft, to beat Phil Mickelson, was a stunning blow for USA and went a huge way towards Europe’s victory.

What a week, what a day.

Sam Torrance OBE is a multiple Ryder Cup-winning golfer and media commentator who led Europe to victory as captain in 2002.

How yesterday’s triumph unfolded
17.06: Europe’s Luke Donald tees off with victory looking highly unlikely at 10-6 to USA.

21.16: Europe’s comeback begins to look possible after Paul Lawrie’s 5&3 win over Brandt Snedeker gives makes the score 10-8

22.32: Lee Westwood beats Kuchar 3&2 to level the score at 12-12

22.35: America’s Jim Furyk misses a put to give Europe a 13-12 lead

23.13: Martin Kaymer caps Europe’s comeback to seal a 14½-13½ victory.
