Nearly 2,000 new Covid-19 cases in Scotland have been linked to football fans watching Euro 2020 fixtures.

Public Health Scotland (PHS) said two-thirds of the 1,991 cases recorded were people who travelled to London for Scotland’s game against England on 18 June.

This included 397 fans who were at the game at Wembley.

A further 55 cases were linked to a fanzone in Glasgow, while 75 were connected with Scotland’s home games against Croatia and the Czech Republic at Hampden Park.

The data showed three-quarters of the positive cases were in people aged under the age of 40 and 90 per cent are men.

Scotland was allocated just 2,600 tickets for the game at Wembley due to restrictions on crowd sizes.

But tens of thousands of fans are thought to have travelled down to the capital despite warnings not to do so unless they had a ticket.

Photos showed large crowds gathering in Leicester Square on the afternoon of the match.

Cases were tagged if people attended either an organised Euro 2020 event at a stadium or fanzone or if they went to an informal gathering to watch the game, such as at a pub or house party.

More than 30,000 people in Scotland have tested positive for Covid-19 since the start of the tournament earlier this month, with Scotland thought to have the highest rate of the virus of any UK nation.
