Following the example of the Finnish Prime Minister, Labour leadership hopefuls Andy Burnham and Jeremy Corbyn have said they will share their homes with Syrian refugees.

Speaking to Channel 4 News, both candidates said they would emulate efforts made by Juha Sipila, the Finnish Prime Minister, who previously offered his second home to refugees, as Europe continues to grapple with how to manage an influx of refugees.

Talking to YLE, a Finnish television channel, on Saturday, Sipila said:

I hope this becomes some kind of people's movement that will inspire many others to shoulder part of the burden in this refugee housing crisis.

We should all take a look in the mirror and ask how we can help.

This comes after over 40 councils across the UK replied to another Labour leadership candidate, Yvette Cooper, to say they are ready to offer sanctuary to Syrian refugees.

David Cameron announced on Friday, during a visit to Portugal and Spain, the UK will accept “thousands” more refugees from Syria into the UK, as well as add an extra £100m of aid funding to help Syrian refugee camps.
