EU migrant crisis: Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris wants to buy an island to house Syrian refugees

David Cameron may be struggling to come up with a solution to the escalating refugee crisis, but one billionaire has an idea that he thinks might just work.

Egyptian telecoms tycoon Naguib Sawiris has offered to buy an island – from “Greece or Italy”, make it independent and let Syrian refugees make it their new home.

Jobs will come from migrants “building their new country”, he added.

Given there have been four million people displaced as a result of the ongoing conflict, it's likely he might need to buy a pretty big island – but if there's not enough room, no problem: he'll buy another one.

He admits it's a crazy idea – but he's been getting lots of credit on Twitter for coming up with a solution. It certainly beats Cameron's plan so far…
