England outcast Sheridan set to join British colony in Toulon
ENGLAND prop Andrew Sheridan has effectively called time on his international career after agreeing a deal to join the growing British contingent at big-spending Toulon.
Sheridan, who was not considered for England’s Six Nations squad because of a shoulder injury, will leave Sale for the Top 14 outfit at the end of the season.
The 32-year-old’s decision is likely to deny him the chance to add to his 40 caps, as England chiefs have pledged not to select overseas players.
Loose-head Sheridan is expected to be followed to Toulon by two more England outcasts in London Irish pair Delon Armitage and Nick Kennedy.
Record-breaking former England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson, fellow 2003 World Cup winner Simon Shaw and Armitage’s brother Steffon are already at the club.
Toulon are also thought to be interested in luring Wales and British Lions prop Gethin Jenkins, whose Cardiff Blues contract expires at the end of the season.
Sale executive director of sport Steve Diamond said of Sheridan’s impending departure: “He’s been a loyal member of the club but he feels he’s best suited for the next two or three years to try playing in France.”
