Dustin Johnson surges to top of FedEx Cup standings with three-shot victory at BMW Championship

America's Dustin Johnson stormed to top of the FedEx Cup standings after cruising to a three-shot victory over England’s Paul Casey at the BMW Championship in Indiana.

Johnson continued his scintillating form this year, which includes a maiden Major success at the US Open at Oakmont in June, by carding a final round 67 to finish 23 under for the tournament. The 32-year-old has now recorded three victories in his last eight starts.

After opening his final round with a birdie, successive bogeys allowed Casey to draw level and share the lead, before birdies at the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth and a front nine of 33 reasserted Johnson’s authority. A stunning eagle at the 15th cushioned the blow of a bogey at the 13th, which ultimately mattered little.

Johnson is now 979 points clear of compatriot Patrick Reed in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake in a fortnight as he bids to scoop the $10m prize.

Northern Ireland’s world No3 Rory McIlory, meanwhile, failed to build on his victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship last week as he slipped out of the top five in the standings after carding a final round 72, which saw him finish well off the pace at Crooked Stick.

McIlroy and Graeme McDowell tied for 42nd place on three under. Scotland’s Russell Knox fared better to finish tied for 17th, as Justin Rose tied for 25th.

Defending champion and world No1 Jason Day was forced to withdraw after incurring a back injury on the ninth tee.
