Djokovic’s US Open in doubt after retirement hands title to Murray
BRITAIN’S Andy Murray became only the second man this year to get the better of Novak Djokovic as he won the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati last night.
World No1 Novak Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury in the second set, with Murray firmly in control and 6-4, 3-0 ahead.
It handed Murray a seventh career Masters series title and a timely boost to his hard-court season ahead of the US Open, which starts next week.
But Djokovic’s injury raises questions about his ability to challenge for – or even play at – the fourth and final Major of the season.
The Serb appears to be suffering from an historic season in which he has won 57 matches and lost just once, amassing the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles on the way.
