Twitter was abuzz yesterday with hashtags like #inspired and #TheFutureLooksGreat after the new boss of Tesco paid a surprise visit to a leadership conference in Birmingham.

Retail newbie Dave Lewis, who has jumped in to save Tesco, made news headlines after he wrote to his 500,000 employees asking them to email him with ideas for ways to improve the chain. Clearly his personable memo and unexpected visit are working. Paul Windor tweeted: “Wow… Dave Lewis just gatecrashed our conference!!! Very inspirational tons of energy. Brilliant. Totally changed the mood.”

Lewis, a former executive at Unilever, took over from Phil Clarke a month earlier than planned.
