Daley makes a splash again as teenage dive star rediscovers his golden touch
TEENAGE diving sensation Tom Daley toasted a return to form after he and partner Max Brick won gold for England in the 10m synchro at the Commonwealth Games.
Daley has struggled with new routines, adapting to growth and serious injury since becoming a world champion at the age of 14 in July last year.
But he and Brick never looked back after taking the lead in the second round, beating Australia into second place while Canada took the bronze.
“It has been a difficult year since Rome with injury, growing and learning new dives. It has been tough,” said Daley, now 16.
“We were only training 10 days at the European Championships before I tore my tricep and we had 10 days before we came here so it’s only been 20 days of training since Rome and we’ve come away with a Commonwealth gold medal.”
With a world title in the 10m platform already under his belt, and now Commonwealth glory also on his CV, the Plymouth youngster is in no doubt which medal he wants to claim next. “I’ve just got one more title to get before the end of my career and that is the Olympic gold,” added Daley, left, who will be one of Britain’s best medal hopes at London 2012.
“That is the aim I’ve got to get before I retire. I hope to try and do as many Olympics as I can before my body falls apart and I’d love to keep going until I get that gold medal.”
Daley and Brick racked up 439.65 points in front of British Olympic chief Seb Coe, 15.84 points better than Australia’s accomplished pair Matthew Mitcham and Ethan Warren.
