Paypal has buckled under the pressure of Cyber Monday shoppers, experiencing technical issues when users try to pay during the checkout process.

A technical notification on its website, posted at 2.20pm said:

We are experiencing a system issue which may be affecting PayPal APIs and PayPal Website on the PayPal Live Site.

Users may be intermittently experiencing timeout errors while going through the PayPal checkout flow and/or accessing https://www.paypal.com. Some merchants would be noticing an increase in timeouts connecting to API endpoints.

Our technical teams are actively working to fix the issue, will provide an update as soon as this issue is resolved.

A further update said service had mostly recovered and PayPal's technical teams were monitoring the situation. The service experienced similar issues yesterday.

According to downdetector.com, issues reported by users included problems loging in, sending payments and generally accessing the website. Around 600 issues were reported to the website at around 2pm.

Cyber Monday and Black Friday are expected to bring many retailers their busiest shopping period of the year with shoppers turning online and away from the high-street to get hold of the best deals.

A PayPal spokesperson said: “Earlier today, PayPal experienced a brief, intermittent interruption in our service. We have resolved the issue and customers can pay with PayPal on Cyber Monday”

Shares in PayPal, which was recently spun off from eBay, were down more than one per cent in early trading.
