ENGLISH cricket is mourning the death of former international Trevor Bailey who died in a fire at his home aged 87.

Bailey played 61 Tests and was a member of a side which won three consecutive Ashes series between 1953 and 1956. England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke praised Bailey’s “enormous contribution to the game” and he also hailed him as “one of the finest all-rounders this country has ever produced.”

Bailey, who was nicknamed ‘Barnacle’ after recording the slowest ever Test half-century, played his entire first class career at Essex and was later a member of the BBC’s Test Match Special commentary team.
