Kilkeel Seafoods in County Down has temporarily shut down as a result of a Coronavirus outbreak.

The factory closed last Thursday following 42 confirmed positive cases. The tests were taken as a preventive measure as a small number of staff began to test positive last week. The factory employs 250 people.

Management stressed it had followed strict Covid-19 guidelines, including social distancing and the use of PPE.

Three testing centres opened in Kilkeel in early June after a notable increase of cases were discovered. At the time, hundreds of people were invited to take a Covid-19 test for the new Delta variant. This was the first time enhanced testing was used within Northern Ireland.

Although shut down, members of staff who did test negative at Kilkeel Seafoods will return to the premises shortly.
