Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed that Parliament will be recalled on Monday after an "attack on democracy".

Appearing alongside David Cameron in Birstall following the murder of Jo Cox yesterday, Corbyn said he had requested that Parliament be recalled to allow MPs to pay tribute, and that his request had been granted.

Cameron called for both sides of the political debate to unite.

"Where we see hatred, where we see division, where we see intolerance, we must drive it out of our public life and politics," said Cameron.

"Parliament has lost one of its most passionate and brilliant campaigners – someone who epitomised that politics is about serving others."

"It was an attack on democracy, what happened yesterday. It was the well of hatred that killed her," said Corbyn.

"We must come together to understand that everyone must have protection and security in order to function in a democratic society. She was an exceptional woman."

Cox, the member of parliament for Batley and Spen, was attacked yesterday afternoon as she approached the local library before her constituency surgery. A 52-year-old man named locally as Thomas Mair has been arrested.

Today both the Conservatives and Ukip said they would not put forward candidates in the Batley and Spen by-election.
