Controversial Wales try sickens Ireland
IRELAND winger Keith Earls has joined his team-mates in condemning the wrongly awarded try that cost them victory and handed Wales a 19-13 win in Saturday’s RBS 6 Nations clash.
Mike Phillips’ 50th-minute touchdown was allowed to stand despite three offences in the preceding line-out, and it proved decisive as the hosts ended on top at the Millennium Stadium.
Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll was quick to deride the contentious decision after the game, calling it “unforgivable” and “a massive momentum swinger”, and Lions star Earls echoed his skipper.
“The try was controversial. It’s bad to lose, but when you lose like that, it’s sickening. It’s heart-breaking.
“The rules state you can’t take a quick line-out with another ball. There were six points in the game and with the conversion, the try meant seven points, so it was a big factor in the result.
“We talked about it at the time, asking what happened. When we found out, it was sickening.”
