Classy Ferrer blows tired Novak away
SPANIARD David Ferrer caused another shock at the ATP World Tour Finals last night, following up his victory over Andy Murray with a straight sets win against world No1 Novak Djokovic.
After edging past Tomas Berdych in his tournament opener, a clearly fatigued Djokovic was blown away 6-3, 6-1 by Ferrer in just 75 minutes at the 02 Arena in London.
Ferrer is now through to semi-finals with a game to spare, while Djokovic must beat compatriot Janko Tipsarevic in his final outing in Group A tomorrow to make it through to the knockout stages.
“I think Novak maybe was a little bit tired today, he made a few mistakes,” said Ferrer after handing his opponent just his fifth loss in 2011.
“But I played really well. I didn’t make mistakes and for me this tournament is very important. Last year I didn’t win a match and this year I’ve won two, so I’m really, really happy.”
Earlier in the day Berdych secured his first win of the tournament with a gutsy 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Tipsarevic, who had less than 24 hours’ notice that he would be taking injured Murray’s place in the event
“I was unlucky against Djokovic but I got luckier here so there is still a good chance to qualify,” said Berdych.
“Before the tie-break I was feeling pretty good, I would say pretty confident. I did not think about what happened the last time against Djokovic.”
