CITY VIEWS: IS THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY RIGHT TO SAY THE CITY SHOULD REPENT FOR CAUSING THE CRISIS?

LEE VELLEMAN BANCO ESPIRITO SANTO
“The public perception of the City is that everyone belongs to the higher echelons of salary and decision making, but for the most part, we are not. To tar every City worker with the same brush is misleading and shows a lack of understanding. It’s like saying that all athletes take drugs!”

YOGI PANDYA
ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND
“He is justified in expressing his opinion, especially in his role of supporting people. The top dogs in the City should take their share of the blame but we have all been caught up in financial greed in the run-up to the crisis, with instruments for gain such as shares and buy-to-let properties.”

KARYEN O’MAHONY
EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT
“The Archbishop probably thinks it is his business to comment – his responsibility is to care for people and a lot of families have been left in dire straits because of the crisis. Certain people at the top probably should repent, and the continued big bonuses don’t help their cause.”

ARIF HUSSEIN ROYAL BANK OF CANADA
“His comments are probably only to be expected given the negative public perception of what’s happened. But it is wrong to generalise in that way – obviously some people in the City have profited but there are plenty who have lost their jobs and suffered along with everyone else.”
