City crash but Utd and Villa progress

MANCHESTER CITY crashed out in the third round with a 2-1 defeat at top-flight rivals West Brom, Gianni Zuiverloon and Simon Cox scoring.

Michael Owen struck twice as Manchester United recovered from an early scare to beat Scunthorpe 5-2, Darron Gibson, Chris Smalling and Ji-Sung Park also netting for the holders.

Ashley Young hit two as Gerard Houllier began his reign at Aston Villa with a 3-1 win over Blackburn.
