City PM Awards 2016: Our business heroes make the most of the madness

Businesses hate uncertainty, so we’re told. The lobby groups that represent UK plc constantly remind us of the benefits of a calm economic and political environment, with benign conditions nurturing growth and prosperity.

It’s a nice thought, and an understandable sentiment. But the reality is that life is never straightforward, and some of the business world’s most successful innovations have come on the back of political strife. Indeed, business itself is largely a test of innovation and adaptation. Markets reward the bold, the nimble, the forward-thinking.

Those who dither and whine and procrastinate do not tend to get far. Business is a realm dominated by positive, optimistic free-thinkers. One is reminded of this fact each year, when we gather to celebrate the nominees and winners of the City PM Awards. Packed with 500 figures from the Square Mile and beyond, the hall is always a vibrant reminder of the energy that is injected every day into entrepreneurial ventures and economic growth.

This year has thrown up some bizarre and unexpected political hurdles. June’s shock referendum outcome rocked the business world, but now seems relatively minor when compared to the election of Donald Trump – an event that has already bamboozled markets throughout the world.

These are extremely testing and uncertain times, but among the chaos lies opportunity, and the city’s movers and shakers will continue to give us reasons to be cheerful.

London is home to millions of people who strive every day to succeed in their working lives. The Awards – now in their seventh year – give us an opportunity to celebrate 70 nominees and 14 lucky winners, but it is also a chance to recognise the wider contribution of all our readers.
