Chelsea fans rebel again and turn down invitation to join CPO board
THE BAND of Chelsea fans who helped scupper the club’s bid to buy back the freehold of Stamford Bridge have rejected an offer to join the board of the company which owns it.
Chelsea Pitch Owners chairman Steve Frankham, who succeeded Richard King as chairman after accepting an invitation to return to the role by the remaining directors last week, asked a representative of the Say No CPO (SNCPO) campaign to become a fourth director of the fan-led organisation.
But SNCPO have turned down the offer and are likely to press ahead with their desire to gain greater representation on the board at next month’s AGM
SNCPO said in a statement on Tuesday: “The group felt that having just one token director on a board of four exposed that director to excessive risk in the light of recent and current activities of CPO, and did not address the issue that the board had not acted in the best interests of CPO, and did not reflect the views of long-standing shareholders.”
The news comes after Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay revealed on Monday that the club hope to secure a naming rights sponsor for Stamford Bridge before next season.
