Drinkers rejoice: food delivery startup Deliveroo is expanding beyond the simple delivery of food and into into takeaway alcohol, including wine, craft beer and cocktails.

The startup backed by top investors has inked new deals with Majestic Wines and Brewdog among others to bring the tipples straight to people's doors after testing out the drinks-only and finding "strong consumer demand".

“Majestic Wines and BrewDog are perfect launch partners for us offering great pairings for meals ordered on Deliveroo and by working with independent merchants like Clapton Craft and Humble Grape we’re continuing to champion the UK’s independent businesses as well,” said Deliveroo's UK managing director Dan Warne.

Deliveroo users can order from eight Majestic Wine stores in London from today – St John’s Wood, Guildford, Covent Garden, Battersea, Hove, Islington, Mayfair and Holland Park – and from 20 Brewdog locations across the country.

It is also partnering with smaller independent sellers such as Lea and Sandeman in Barnes, Honest Brew, Mother Kellys in Bethnal Green and Vagabond Wines in Soho.

Deliveroo has succeeded in turning the simple idea of getting food delivered from restaurants which don't have a takeaway service, to people's doorsteps, attracting more than £150m from venture capital investors and with more funding reportedly on its way. Now it intends to do the same with alcohol.

The move into alcohol comes as it faces competition from Uber, which launched its UberEats delivery service in London last month, although the four-year-old startup delivers in more cities and countries and has shaken off suggestions that they are rivals.
