Thought Barack Obama did it quickly? Meet Caitlyn Jenner, who just beat the record for reaching 1m followers on Twitter: she hit the big number in just four hours. Obama (@POTUS) only managed it in five…

Jenner, a former Olympic athlete and current reality star who was born Bruce and has regularly featured on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, launched her Twitter career with two statements. Firstly, an Annie Leibovitz shot of herself on the cover of Vanity Fair:

Secondly, a statement of intent:

I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me.

Her account has even spawned a bot – @she_not_he – which corrects those who tweet the wrong pronoun for her .

Jenner announced her plans to transition from male to female in an interview earlier this year. Although she beat Obama's record by just a few weeks, Robert Downey Jr., the previous record holder, hung on to it for a year, having reached 1m followers in just over 23 hours in April last year.
