Bugatti unveils €11m supercar to mark 110th anniversary

Luxury car brand Bugatti has unveiled a €11m (£9.5m) supercar, but will not name the wealthy mystery buyer.

La Voiture Noire, which was created for the French firm’s 110th anniversary, was snapped up by an unnamed Bugatti fan and is thought to be the most expensive new car of all time.

The one-off supercar, unveiled today at the Geneva Motor Show, is intended as a modern interpretation of Jean Bugatti’s famous Type 57 SC Atlantic.

“Bugatti has again proved that it makes the world’s most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive hyper sports cars,” said Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann. “It is a feast of aesthetics,” he added.

While the firm refers to the buyer only as an “enthusiast”, rumours abound that former chairman of Bugatti's parent company Volkswagen, Ferdinand Piech, is the lucky new owner. Piech left the German car manufacturer in 2015 after a public spat with its chief executive.

The tailor-made car was handcrafted from carbon fibre and its body and windscreen are designed to flow seamlessly “like the visor on a helmet”. But Bugatti said the heart of its new creation is its 16-cyclinder engine.

“This is not only an engine but the heart of the vehicle and a technical masterpiece,” said Winkelmann. “There is no other car in the world with such an engine.”
