Britain yesterday announced it would deploy more than 750 personnel to Sierra Leone next week to aid the fight against the deadly Ebola virus.

The UK will also provide an aviation support ship and three Merlin helicopters as part of increased efforts to help contain the virus, which has so far claimed the lives of 3,879 people in the epidemic.

Meanwhile, the World Bank Group said that if the epidemic was not brought under control soon, the cost to the global economy could amount to more than £32.6bn (£20.2bn) by the end of next year.

With the virus spreading away from Africa, bio-chemists at the University of Utah said they had discovered a way that could help them develop a cure for all strains of the virus. They say they have found a molecule that controls the virus’ entry into a human cell and initiates infection. They are developing drugs to target the molecule.
