ENGLAND’S Luke Donald overcame the new world No1 Martin Kaymer to land the biggest prize of his career, the WGC Match Play in Arizona.

The 33-year-old beat his German opponent 3&2 to land the £864,838 winners’ cheque, and as a result of victory he jumps six places to No3 in the world rankings.

Kaymer usurped Lee Westwood over the course of weekend as world No1 and looked set to cap that achievement with victory here when he levelled the match at the turn having been three down after five holes.

However, Donald, who did not trail in any of his matches all week, birdied the 11th, 12th and 15th and closed out the match at the 16th.

Donald said: “I can’t describe it – I’m close to tears. It feels amazing. I’ve put a lot of work in over the last five years and it’s nice to see it pay.

“This is a great win for me. Hopefully it will open the gates and there will be more big wins for me.”

KAYMER’S RISE AND RISE

Aug 2010: Wins USPGA Championship to claim his first major

Sep 2010 : Plays a major role in helping Europe to reclaim the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor
