Crypto at a glance

The crypto markets are looking a little more buoyant today, echoing a general uplift across the traditional markets after the S&P closed higher yesterday for the first time in six days.

Both Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) are up more than three per cent this morning to $46k and $3.3k respectively.

The move comes after a confusing day in the crypto world, with mainstream media outlets falling prey to a convincing fake press release announcing that Walmart had partnered with Litecoin (LTC) to offer cryptocurrency payments to its customers. Even Reuters fell for the ruse, which is being credited to a well-orchestrated pump-and-dump scheme.

The other big story yesterday was business software company MicroStrategy’s announcement that it bought an additional 5,050 BTC. The company now holds 114,042 BTC worth more than $5 billion, which were acquired for a total of $3.16 billion and at an average price of $27,713 per Bitcoin.

Elsewhere, all coins are up today. Solana (SOL) continues its ascent, regaining another 10 per cent to within touching distance of the top five cryptocurrencies by market cap. Solana’s trading volume has surged recently, rising 42 per cent, compared with a nine per cent decline in Bitcoin over the same period. Will it break the top five?
