Barnes still leads after rain delay
THE 109th US Open champion may now not be declared until as late as Wednesday after heavy rain caused further delays at Bethpage Black.
Play was suspended for another five hours yesterday morning prompting the majority of the 60-man field to tee off for their final rounds late last night.
It means play will roll on into the Monday for the first time since Larry Nelson won at Oakmont in 1983, while tomorrow and indeed Wednesday have also been set aside for a possible play-off as the US Open is the only one of the four Majors that stipulates an 18-hole play-off.
The delay, however, didn’t seem to hinder overnight leader Ricky Barnes, who fired a steady even-par 70 to maintain his lead going into the final round at eight-under-par.
The former US Amateur champion, without a win in six years as a professional, was a shot clear of Lucas Glover after he also shot a 70.
British hopes rest with England’s Ross Fisher, who fired a 69 to move into a share of third with former world No1 David Duval. They are three-under, while defending champion and world No1 Tiger Woods is nine shots off the lead after a 68.
