Barclays to restructure 460 UK jobs and cut more than 50 roles

Barclays is set to carry out a restructuring plan that will slash around 54 roles and impact at least 400 more across the UK.

A Barclays spokesperson said while the bank will relocate a number of operations and technology roles, it is not reducing the overall number of jobs overall, except in a few cases of duplication, and will remain a “significant employer” in both Coventry and Birmingham.

The decision was made to move teams closer together at the bank's sites in Glasgow, Greater Manchester and Northampton, areas where the lender is investing in new office space.

Restructuring is expected to impact 234 jobs at Coventry Westwood Park and 101 roles at Birmingham Snowhill.

Unite has said other areas impacted by the restructuring include Canary Wharf, Fleet, Liverpool, Northampton, Cardiff, Belfast, Poole, Leeds, Stockton on Tees, Petersfield, and Manchester.

Dominic Hook, Unite's national officer, said that the job losses are “extremely alarming” and will be “a huge blow for the workforce”.

“Unite is very clear that the decision to cut around 460 jobs will result in a large number of compulsory redundancies which will bring a noticeable impact on customer service across Barclays,” said Hook.

“The union will continue to engage with Barclays to discuss redeployment and outplacement support options for the employees, with a specific focus on training opportunities,” he added.

The news comes a year after almost 200 staff members in fraud operations were cut in Barclay's Coventry office.
