Barclays has called upon a former senior executive at Bank of America Merrill Lynch to step into the role of chief operating officer.

Jonathan Moulds will join the British bank in February in a role that has remained vacantsince Jerry del Missier walked away amid an interest-rate rigging scandal in 2012.

Antony Jenkins, Barclays chief executive, said it was time for the role to return in order to “continue to deliver on strategy.”

Moulds spent 17 years at Bank of America and Merrill Lynch in various roles including chief executive of Merrill Lynch International.

At Barclays he will take charge of the bank's structural reform programme including the group’s “Transform” programme, which will cut thousands of jobs.

Moulds said he was excited to play a role in “leading the transformation” of Barclays.

This is a period of profound change for Barclays as the group builds momentum in the implementation of its strategy and deals with external forces including structural reform.
Barclays will also welcome a new chairman in April, with John McFarlane stepping over from Aviva.

Jenkins commented:

The progress we have made over the past two years in terms of operational, financial, and cultural transformation at Barclays has been enormous.

My decision to create a group chief operating officer role at this time is specifically intended to ensure we continue to deliver on our strategy, but more importantly to ensure we continue to deliver on our strategy, but more importantly to accelerate execution where possible.
