Barcelona have become the first club to announce revenue figures worth over £500m after generating record-breaking turnover of €679m (£570m) in the 2015/16 season.

The Catalan club, who won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey last season, believe the results keep the club on course of meeting its revenue target of €1bn by 2021.

The board described the figures, larger than any Real Madrid have ever disclosed to date, as "representing a substantial increase of the figure originally budgeted for this area."

Bitter rivals Real Madrid have occupied the No1 spot in Deloitte's annual money league, a ranking of football clubs by revenue, for 11 straight years, finishing one spot above Barcelona last year.

They are expected to trump Barcelona once again when announcing their revenue figures for a 2105/16 campaign in which they won their 11th Champions League trophy.

Barcelona also enjoyed net profit of €29m for the season.

The club recently announced a renewal of their Qatar Airways shirt sponsorship for next season in a deal worth around £25m a year.
