HSBC and NatWest online banking glitch: Bankers return unrested after bank holidays

HSBC and NatWest faced the financial equivalent of leaving the oven on before going on holiday this weekend, as both banks suffered IT glitches over the bank holiday leaving over 275,000 customers without their wages.

The fault meant that salaries were not transferred from HSBC business accounts to the accounts of employees, including those who bank elsewhere.

HSBC said on Sunday it had processed “99 per cent” of payments affected by an IT glitch, with the remainder due to be completed overnight, but many were still waiting.

Britons took to Twitter to vent about not being able to pay for mortgages, rent and loo roll.

Reactions ranged from the panicked to the frustrated.

While some tweeters were so concerned by their inability to pay their rent they were reduced to just writing “help HSBC help I can’t get my money help”, user Don Perrotto was more upset that his daily routine was out of kilter, saying “my card keeps not working I couldn’t even get a Mcflurry or toilet roll for my  ****. Sort it out”.

Meanwhile NatWest, which pledged to keep some branches open over the weekend, was also having trouble.

NatWest’s payment system crashed yesterday, leaving customers unable to transfer funds, though it said the  service was fixed by late morning.

Looks like not all bankers will be  coming back to work well rested…
