Asking for a raise isn’t always easy – Here are tips on how to charm your boss into a pay rise
Natural charm is a trait we’d all like to have been born with – just imagine the joys of never being at a loss for words.
But even if you’re not a natural George Clooney type, it is possible to charmingly with your boss could get you a pay rise, suggests Jordan Harbinger, the host of the Art of Charm podcast.
Harbinger joined City PM on our Unregulated podcast and gave his pointers – here’s how he reckons you can get ahead of the game.
Admit to having an agenda
Harbinger says beginning a conversation with an agenda is a uniquely un-charming trait – but in this case, the best thing to do is admit to it early on in the conversation. “It’s great to have an agenda, it just needs to be out on the table,” says Harbinger – that way you avoid seeming like you have an ulterior motive.
Don’t waffle
Avoid waffling and forcibly complimenting your boss, only to end with “can I have a raise?” – you don’t want your boss to think you’re only being nice because you want something in return. Be more creative in your approach in order gain the desired outcome: get to the point as soon as you get into the meeting, so your boss knows what he or she is in for.
Be tactical
Explain how your work has impacted the company – what the company has achieved since you joined signifies how much of an asset you are. Outlining your worth to the company makes you seem more desirable, it's a more “charming and effective” way to ask for a raise, says Harbinger. Whatever you do, don’t give your boss an ultimatum. Not only is it “low on the charm totem poll”, but it will probably have a negative effect on your relationship if you choose to go down that route.
