Argos has announced the introduction of eReceipts across its 750 UK and Ireland stores.

The scheme gives Argos’ customers the option to have a receipt emailed to them to keep a record of purchases and warranties and has already been trialled this year.

The technology has been developed by eReceipts, which is chaired by the former chief executive of Tesco Lord MacLaurin.

MacLaurin led the supermarket to become the UK’s biggest and launched the Tesco club card – Britain’s first supermarket loyalty card.

The technology also provides Argos with real-time information, giving insight into customers’ shopping habits.

The platform also gives Argos a new way to communicate with customers and provide them with offers. Emails sent by eReceipts currently have a 70 per cent open rate, according to a statement released yesterday by the firms.

The move is part of Argos’ five-year “Transformation Plan” to become a digital retail leader. The plan has already included partnering eBay to allow its customers to collect goods from Argos stores.

Also in the plan is Argos’ recently introduced “hub and spoke” distribution network.

“We are very excited about this initiative, especially as trials have been well received by colleagues and customers alike,” said Stephen Vowles, Argos marketing director.

“Customers love it because they feel reassured that they have a record of purchases without cluttering up their wallets, and colleagues appreciate the benefits which enable them to provide an even more convenient service to customers.”
