Apple has admitted it has been counting readers of its News app wrong and that the number of people using it has been underestimated since launching in September.

The mistake was blamed on an unspecified glitch and means some of the world's biggest media companies, which publish their content through the app, have incorrect figures.

Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, told the Wall Street Journal: "We’re in the process of fixing that now, but our numbers are lower than reality. We don’t know what the right number is.” He added that undercounting was better than overcounting, however.

He also revealed that so far, 40m readers have used the app, which is available on iOS 9 devices in the UK, US and Australia.
