APPLE yesterday won $290m (£179m) in a damages retrial against Samsung, as the two companies continue to battle globally over their patent holdings.

The technology giants have been fighting in the courts for over two years. Last year, Apple was awarded over $1bn in damages after it convinced a jury that Samsung copied various features from its flagship iPhone – such as using fingers to pinch and zoom on the screen – along with design touches like the iPhone’s flat, black glass screen.

The verdict was announced in California following a weeklong trial in which Apple had requested $379.8m in damages, while Samsung argued that it should have to pay only $52.7m. Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said it was grateful to the jury for imposing costs on Samsung, though the case was about more than money for the company. Samsung declined to comment.
