E-commerce giant Amazon is looking for more than 120,000 workers in the United States to tide it over during the busy Christmas period.

Thousands of the temporary workers will be kept on beyond the holiday season, Amazon said.

The announcement from Amazon comes shortly after it said it would be opening a new warehouse in Northamptonshire, creating 300 new jobs.

Mike Roth, Amazon's vice president for global consumer fulfilment, said: "This is our favourite time of year – we love serving customers during the busy holiday season and we're excited to bring on more than 120,000 seasonal employees this year to support growing customer demand.

"Last year alone, more than 14,000 seasonal employees stayed on in regular, full-time positions after the holidays and we expect to increase that number this year."

Several retailers have said they are looking for thousands of new recruits for the busiest time of year for retailers.

John Lewis is looking for 3,500 staff for the Christmas period, filling roles in the John Lewis Christmas shop, as well as the retailer's electrical, home and catering departments.

Argos is recruiting 10,000 workers for its 840 stores, which will also include "Fast Track" drivers who will be delivering Christmas goods door-to-door.

Steve Carson, director of retail and customer operations at Argos, said: "The Christmas period is naturally an extremely busy and exciting time of year for Argos.

"Job creation is one of the most important contributions we make to the communities in which we serve and we are committed to maintaining the friendly, personal service we are known for, whether customers are shopping in-store or buying online for home delivery."
