Amazon is set to create an extra 13,000 temporary jobs in the UK over the Christmas season as the online giant braces itself for the busiest trading period of the year.

The company announced yesterday it will hire people to work across it eight fulfilment centres across the UK and its customer service centre in Edinburgh.

It comes just a week after Amazon announced it will hire a further 1,000 permanent employees at its fulfilment centres in the coming months and launched a same-day pick-up service.

Amazon said on the busiest day last year in the run up to Christmas, customers ordered 4.1m items, or 47 items per second.
