Shares in plane manufacturer Airbus and German airline Lufthansa fell in morning trading today, after Germanwings flight 4U9525 from Barcelona to Duesseldorf had crashed in the southern French Alps, killing up to 150 people on board.

Airbus, which made the A320 plane that crashed, was down 1.75 per cent in Paris to €58.95, while shares in Lufthansa, which owns Germanwings, was 2.21 per cent lower, at €13.48 in Frankfurt.

Last week Lufthansa shares were hit when flights were grounded by a four-day pilots' strike, holding up 220,000 passengers.

Lufthansa confirmed the flight's disappearance on Twitter, saying:

We must confirm to our deepest regret that Germanwings Flight 4U9525 from Barcelona to Duesseldorf has suffered an accident over the French Alps. The flight was being operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, and was carrying 144 members and six crew members… Everyone at Germanwings and Lufthansa is deeply shocked and saddened by these events. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the passengers and crew members.
