Lloyd’s of London brings in Banking Standards Board to conduct independent review

Lloyd’s of London has commissioned an independent review into its workplace culture following allegations of sexual harassment and bullying.

The insurance market has asked the Banking Standards Board to conduct a market-wide investigation beginning tomorrow.

A survey will be given to about 45,000 brokers, underwriters and Lloyd’s staff and the marketplace will also hold a number of focus groups, The Sunday Times reported

Survey questions will include whether employees feel able to report cases of inappropriate behaviour and whether they have wanted to report instances of sexual harassment over the last 12 months.

Last week the 330-year-old marketplace warned that anyone under the influence of alcohol in the market could face disciplinary action if drinking leads to reckless underwriting, unprofessional conduct or is an aggravating factor in harassment.

In March Lloyd’s revealed a “robust plan” to create a safer workplace environment following a Bloomberg report that claimed 18 women had described an atmosphere of “near-persistent harassment”, with one former employee describing the exchange as “basically a meat market”.

The measures included making it easier for staff to lodge complaints, the creation of an access point for inappropriate behaviour to be reported, and the company said that individuals found to be guilty would face sanctions and could face being banned from the building for life.
