Carlos Ghosn ousted from Nissan board after rearrest

Nissan shareholders this morning voted to dump embattled former chairman Carlos Ghosn off the company’s board only days after he was rearrested in Tokyo.

Shareholders, voting in Tokyo, also ejected from the board Greg Kelly, an American ex-director who was seen as Ghosn’s right-hand man, Reuters reported.

Kelly has been accused of involvement in the scandal that saw Ghosn arrested last year and charged with under-reporting his salary for 10 years and transferring personal losses to Nissan’s books.

The extraordinary meeting of Nissan shareholders also approved Renault chairman and chief executive of Michelin Jean-Dominique Senard as a director.

The 65-year-old Ghosn was rearrested in Tokyo last week over allegations he enriched himself with Nissan company funds and caused the car manufacturer $5m (£3.8m) in damages.

The arrest came a month after he had been let out on $9m bail, following a long legal wrangle that held him behind bars for almost four months.

Ghosn’s lead lawyer said the Japanese authorities confiscated the former Nissan boss’s mobile phone and a series of documents at the time of the arrest, while his wife Carole Ghosn had her mobile phone and Lebanese passport taken.

Carole Ghosn has reportedly since flown to France to urge the government there to do more to help her husband, who is a French national who was born in Brazil and is of Lebanese descent.
