Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort sentenced to a further three and half years in prison

Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been sentenced to a further three and half years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of conspiracy.

Manafort was handed a sentence of six years and one month after admitting to two charges related to money laundering, illegal foreign lobbying in Ukraine and attempted witness tampering.

Part of his sentence will run concurrently with the 47 month sentence he was given last week for tax evasion and bank fraud.

In total he will serve seven and a half years in prison.

Both cases were prosecuted by special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his Russia investigation.

“I am sorry for what I have done and for all the activities that have gotten us here today,” he told district judge Amy Berman Jackson.

“This case has taken everything from me already – my properties, my cash, my life insurance, trust accounts for my children and grandchildren, and even more,” he added.

Addressing Manafort in court, Jackson said: “Saying ‘I’m sorry I got caught’ is not an inspiring plea for leniency.”

She added: “The defendant’s insistence that none of this should happening to him… is just one more thing that is inconsistent with the notion of any genuine acceptance of responsibility.”

Shortly after the sentencing, Manafort was indicted by the New York district attorney on charges relating to residential mortgage fraud and other crimes.
